So what the hell, new decade new me!

I guess kicking off the new roaring 2020s with my first post on dreamwidth isn't exactly how I imagined it going, but here we are anyway.

I have already said it in my profile and I will say it again here: I have no idea how this site works, I come from tumblr and although I'm not exactly stranded, far from it, I wanted to venture out of that single site and into the bigger blogging world.

So i don't know what a subscription means, if it's considered bad etiquette to "invite someone in your circle" without asking and every time I post a comment I have a panic attack because I'm afraid I posted an entire new post on accident. Hell, I literally just found out how to change style (btw the one I chose now? is hella nifty).

So I apologize in advance to you, dear reader whoever you may be, who has come to my page in a mix of rage and confusion after I've done the dreamwidth equivalent of dunking a cup of tea in your lap and calling your mother a whore: none of it was my intention, social rules and social clues are already hard in the real world for me, even more in a place like this.

But anyway, hoping I don't accidentally start ww3 with my social cluelessness, I also hope I actually... do stuff. On this blog. I always wanted to get back into writing, maybe in Italian if English is too complicated for me, or maybe post some of my drawings here too. Expect a lot of Sherlock Holmes smooching his Doctor Watson and me making fun of Crowley Goodomens. Who knows, we shall see what impulsive decisions at 2am will bring me to. For now I bid you all farewell, and a very pleasant evening.

Hello and welcome! No tea has been dumped in my lap, never fear, and I'm happy to answer any Dreamwidth questions you may have. (As best as I'm able, that is -- there's unlikely to be a Single Canonical Answer on matters of etiquette.)

If you're looking for something to do to get your feet wet and make some friends, may I suggest the [community profile] snowflake_challenge? I've never managed more than a couple days of it (for time reasons, mostly), but it's fan-centric and has some nice structured get-out-and-meet-people exercises, which can be nice for, well, meeting people, if that's a thing you want to do. :-)

Heh, I happened to be looking at email when the subscription notification came in -- it was just a click from there to your intro post. :-)

You might also be interested in [community profile] acdholmesfest, an ACD-canon fic and art exchange which will have sign-ups next week, and [community profile] watsons_woes, a Watson-centric all-versions-of-Holmes comm that runs a couple of big fic-and-art events each year. (They just finished WAdvent; they have another big event with daily prompts in July; plus some smaller things at other points in the year.) [community profile] holmes_minor might also be of interest to you, although I'm pretty sure they're fic only.

Hello, and welcome to DW! I for one love the access filters and am happy to answer questions, too!

I'm in the same boat as you, though -- hoping that I'll get a bit more active on here this year!

Welcome to DW! You'll get used to it, there's nothing difficult about it. Subscription is basically the same thing as on Tumblr. You'll see entries from the journal you subscribed to in your reading page.

There are also Holmes communities here. I see that Sanguinity already recommended Watson's Woes and Holmes Minor, as well as ACD Fest. I can also humbly add to the list the community I maintain: [community profile] victorian221b - the comm dedicated to Victorian and Edwardian eras and all adaptations set in it. There various historical facts, ACD trivia, documentaries, etc are discussed. Subscribing to a community will add it in your reading list, and joining it will enable you to post in it :)

Hi there and welcome to Dreamwidth!

The jump from tumblr to a journaling platform can be very confusing. and vice versa - it took me ages to figure out how to navigate tumblr when I started there. Let me add my voice to the chorus - if you have questions or need help, I'd be happy to assist. Good call on starting with the Snowflake Challenge, as it's an EXCELLENT way to meet a wide range of people 'round these parts, and to find communities to follow/participate in. And sometimes those communities come to you, as you've experienced. ;D

I hope you have a lovely time, both on dreamwidth and with the snowflake challenge. We're glad you're here!

Hello! Glad you're here, and that you're participating in [community profile] snowflake_challenge.

I'm going to link you to a tag I put together, called Hello New People! It's a few different posts chock full of people talking about Dreamwidth philosophically, tutorials and crosswalks on Dreamwidth if you're coming from Tumblr, and a lot of things that I found useful, which were put together when people were jumping from Tumblr over the NSFW ban. I hope something in there is helpful to you and will make the transition easier for you.

(And if this wasn't good for you, please let me know. I like DW a lot and want people to stay and find it helpful. I also answer questions, although I may give different answers than others in this thread.)

I'm in the exact same boat! I did do some time on LJ back in the day, and this is similar but not quite the same, so thank you to everyone above for your advice!

>>I guess kicking off the new roaring 2020s with my first post on dreamwidth isn't exactly how I imagined it going, but here we are anyway.<<

Welcome!

>>I have already said it in my profile and I will say it again here: I have no idea how this site works<<

Try looking at the menus. That's what I did when I started, and they're pretty intuitive. Basically, you make posts, with have a lot of room for writing or pictures; people can comment. You have tools to determine who can see things or comment. You can read other people's stuff too, and comment on that.

>>So i don't know what a subscription means,<<

Their stuff shows in your reading page. It's in the link that says Reading on the menu bar.

>> if it's considered bad etiquette to "invite someone in your circle" without asking <<

Probably not? But I often see things differently.

>>and every time I post a comment I have a panic attack because I'm afraid I posted an entire new post on accident.<<

Relax. The site is pretty easy to use, and I make computers go haywire, so anything fragile usually breaks under my weight. Dreamwidth is reliable most of the time. A majority of the people are laid-back and not inclined to freak over small stuff.

Read the buttons. Post is at the top of the page. Reply is under a post. Post Comment is under the box where you type your reply. If you put something in the wrong place you can usually copy it into the right place. I've done that, mostly posting to my blog when I meant to post to a community.

>>I always wanted to get back into writing, maybe in Italian if English is too complicated for me, or maybe post some of my drawings here too.<<

Consider [community profile] allbingo or [community profile] crowdfunding if you want inspiration. Both are low-stress communities.

Some easy ways to interact:

* Watch for fests. Last year had Fandom Sunshine in summer, and there are many more.
* Friendship and Love memes are popular, especially in February.
* Recurring posts help build continuity, like a weekly update or books read.
* You can find prompt lists.

It sounds like we have some common interests. Feel free to drop by my blog and see if you like it. I'll be doing a Poetry Fishbowl on Tuesday if you'd like to come watch me make poetry.

Welcome! I gotta confess I don't post over here as often as I'd like but I do like the layout of this site and the IDEA of using it more, lol

Heyoo! I'm pretty much never on here, only made the account during the Great Tumblr Purge of 2018, but good to know you're here too if I ever do pop in!
